From our Corner | September Musings

A life + studio update.

Warm autumn days are nestling their way in. The two orange cats have already begun their transition into slowness, and I find myself following suit. This month, the studio has been glowing with morning light, and it’s felt good to sink into that space—the steady rhythm of the sewing machine, the gentle pull of a needle.

It’s been a push, but I’m deep into the transition from my previous leather hide supplier to the new ones from Wickett & Craig. These vegetable-tanned hides are like liquid gems, rich with jewel tones and a refined semi-gloss finish. Wallets in these new leathers are now available on the website, with the rest of the line rolling out in the coming weeks.

Canvas bags are also in the works and will be online soon, along with belts and a few refreshed home goods—we’ve been busy!

Outside the studio, I’ve been teaching in-person leather workshops for kiddos ages 9–13. Their project these past few weeks has been crafting their very own wallets, and I’ve been humbled and delighted by their skill and enthusiasm. A personal childhood dream even came true when one of them spotted me on the street and shouted, “I know you! You’re Art Teacher!” As the daughter of a lifelong teacher, I couldn’t have been more pleased.

On the quieter side of life, Naomi Novik has captured my reading eye this month. As the season leans inward—what I like to call “the great indoors” of post-river life—I’d love your book recommendations. Send them my way.

Fondly,
Sarah
